The shape of pipes can be represented easily by some few characteristic parameters like radii, start/end/center points, length of cylinder sections and the bend-rotation angles. The main challenge is how to get these values quickly and how to pass them on to bending machines. Measuring pipes only needs some few points on each section and can be carried out quickly with probing devices. But reaching these points is often difficult. Pipes may be positioned on frames at 5m height, obscured by other pipes or parts of complex piping structures and may not have much space around them.

To speed up the piping process, you need software that can work alongside the measurement system. Metronor systems use Metronor TeZetCAD – the most complete and easy-to-use piping software on the market.
Whilst measuring, TeZetCAD automatically visualizes the measured pipe in a CAD view, calculating the bending parameters for you. After the measurement is complete, you can directly interact with the virtual model of the pipe to optimize its shape, compare it with a master model, print out measurement reports and send the bending parameters to the bending machine.
CREATING PIPES ON THE FLY
Often pipes have to be created without any drawing or CAD model, just having two real-world flange end positions. Traditionally you’d use rulers and angle meters to get the space positions for the new pipe, both time-consuming and error-prone. And you’d need skilled people writing everything down, calculating the correct parameters and transferring them to the bending machine to produce the pipe. An iterative process with a lot of re-work and scrap.A smart way of creating pipes in one single step is using the Metronor system to define the desired space positions. First you measure the exact start and end points of the real flanges with the touch probe. Then just roughly measure free positions in space, going along the desired route of the pipe from one flange to the other, matching clamps and avoiding collisions. A quick and elegant method to design a non-existing pipe.
But how does it really work?
When probing the space positions, TeZetCAD automatically creates and visualizes the pipe model on the screen. After the measurement, you can perform a fine-tuning. Just grab and pull the pipe on the screen or enter values directly. TeZetCAD automatically calculates the bending parameters and displays the corrected shape on the screen. When you are done, simply export the bending parameters to a file which can be read in by your bending machine. The video below shows the process.
OPTIMIZING THE BENDING PROCESS
Another important task in the prototyping and production phase is the inspection and comparison of pipes with given parameters or with a CAD model of a master pipe. The aim is to find the correct values for a particular bending machine, either by optimizing the parameters of the pipe or by slightly adjusting the parameters of the bending machine.
With Metronor measurement solutions, you can do this by simply measuring the pipe by probing its cylinder and bend sections. TeZetCAD will then create and display the actual pipe model. If you have a master CAD model available, you can compare the actual and nominal model and check where the pipes differ. Since TeZetCAD calculates the bending parameters, you can compare the actual with the desired values from a drawing of the master pipe. Based on this information you can calculate and send the correction values to the bending machine, optimizing the bending process.
